The History of Cornerstone Hospice

Cornerstone Hospice is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit community healthcare provider that began as a vision born from the compassion and dedication of volunteers in the small community of Eustis, Florida. In the early 1980s, a group of local residents recognized the need for quality, compassionate care for individuals nearing the end of life. Fueled by their desire to help others, they formed an organization to provide care and comfort to patients and their families during life’s final stages.

This group’s commitment led to the founding of Hospice of Lake & Sumter in 1983, a grassroots effort that was the first of its kind in the area. It was built on the principle that every individual deserves dignity and respect in their final days. Volunteers, many of whom had personal experiences with hospice care, offered their time, energy, and skills to create a compassionate environment for patients.

As the organization grew, so did its impact on the community. Hospice of Lake & Sumter expanded its reach throughout Central Florida to more families in need of hospice care, and over time, the name evolved to Cornerstone Hospice, symbolizing the organization's foundation of care, compassion, and service.

Today, Cornerstone Hospice continues to honor its volunteer-driven roots, providing expert care to patients and their families, while remaining true to its mission of comfort and support during life’s most challenging times.
